Peaking for charity
As with so many things a suggestion over a glass of wine turned in to a major challenge, lots of training for the eight climbers, huddling over maps for the three drivers to get the quickest routes and some tin shaking amongst friends, family and business contacts to get sponsorship. A team of 11 including Managing Partner Charles Smith – who drove one of the support vehicles – was assembled for the Three Peaks challenge on the 24th June.
The team agreed to support two great local charities – Myton Hospice and Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance. The money raised – just over £9,000 has been split equally between them
Driving against the clock and within the speed limits and tackling some of the mountain roads kept the drivers on their toes covering nearly 500 miles to ensure the climbers got from Snowdon then Scafell Pike and on to Ben Nevis in good time.
One of the team, David Birch of Samurai Sports kindly donated T shirts, polo shirts and fleece jackets all embroidered with the logos of the team and the charities. The team logo of “Kenilworth Boys” proved something of a godsend when one of the team managed to lose his wife’s camera on the descent of Ben Nevis. A climber from Bolton found the camera, saw the Kenilworth logo on the team shirts and subsequently asked the Kenilworth Weekly News to print a “found on Nevis” article. As a result the lost camera has been returned to a very relieved walker but unfortunately too late to prevent the purchase of a replacement camera for his wife.
Attached is a photo of the team just before the ascent of Snowdon at 08.45 on a Friday morning and a picture of Charles and fellow driver Peter getting breakfast for the team after they came down Ben Nevis.
